BMA2026: The 9th International Meeting on Bone Marrow Adiposity

Location of BMA2026

BMA2026 Teaser.mp4

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century, is a city defined by its dramatic, volcanic landscape and a profound, layered history.

Known as the "Athens of the North", its UNESCO-listed centre showcases a stunning contrast between the narrow, medieval closes of the Old Town and the spacious, elegant Georgian New Town. As the heart of the Scottish Enlightenment, Edinburgh holds massive historical importance as a cradle of philosophy, medicine, and economics, fostering thinkers like David Hume and Adam Smith. Iconic attractions include Edinburgh Castle, which dominates the skyline from its perch on Castle Rock, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the Royal Mile. Scientifically, the city is a global leader, recognized as the birthplace of Dolly the Sheep—the first cloned mammal—and for pioneering work in anesthetics, computing, and geology. Culturally, it is renowned as a festival city, home to the world's largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and serves as the seat of the Scottish Parliament.

Travelling from within the UK

By train

Edinburgh is served by two main railway stations: Edinburgh Waverley (city centre) and Haymarket. There are frequent direct services from London, Newcastle, York, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and many other UK cities. Rail is often the most convenient option for attendees travelling from within Britain.

By air

Edinburgh Airport has frequent domestic flights from a number of UK cities and is located approximately 8 miles / 13 km west of the city centre. We strive to host a low-carbon meeting and so recommend train travel wherever possible.

By coach

Long-distance coach services operate to Edinburgh from across the UK and can be a good lower-cost option.

By car

Edinburgh can also be reached easily by road via the Scottish motorway network. Please note that parking in central Edinburgh can be limited and expensive, so public transport is often the easiest option once in the city.

By air

For most international attendees, the easiest route is to fly into Edinburgh Airport, which offers direct connections to many destinations across Europe and a range of longer-haul routes. If a direct flight to Edinburgh is not available, many visitors travel via major UK hubs such as London, Manchester or Glasgow, and then continue to Edinburgh by domestic flight, train or coach. It is also possible to travel by train from mainland Europe by taking the Eurostar to London, and then domestic train to Edinburgh.

International travel

Getting from the airport or railway station to the venue

From Edinburgh Airport, the city centre can be reached by tram, bus, or taxi. Many of Edinburgh's buses and taxis are electric, providing several low-carbon transport options.

From Edinburgh Waverley or Haymarket train stations, attendees can continue to the venue by taxi or local bus. The venue is not directly beside a mainline rail station, so local public transport or a taxi is recommended for the final part of the journey.

Edinburgh offers a wide range of accommodation, including hotels, guesthouses, serviced apartments and hostels. As September is a popular time to visit Edinburgh, we strongly recommend booking accommodation as early as possible.

For convenience, we suggest looking in one of the following areas:

Accommodation options

Southside / Newington / Holyrood

These areas are among the most convenient for the conference venue and offer a good mix of hotels, guest houses and apartment-style accommodation. They are also well connected to the city centre.

Edinburgh city centre: Old Town / New Town
The city centre offers the widest choice of accommodation, as well as easy access to restaurants, shops and visitor attractions. It is a good option for attendees who would like to stay close to Edinburgh’s main landmarks and travel to the venue each day by bus or taxi.

Bruntsfield / Morningside
These neighbourhoods are slightly quieter but still well connected, with a range of smaller hotels and guest accommodation.
